Method Statement for Pipe Cleaning

  1. Safety Precautions
    1. Check Water Supply
      1. Supply flow rate of 180 to 200 liters per minute;
      2. Supply pressure between 3 bars and 8 bars (booster pump if below 3 bars);
      3. Water temperature less than 350 degrees Celsius;
      4. Water free of suspended particulates
    2. Work Area
      1. Work area properly cordoned off by at least 3 meters done by VELTRUP personnel;
      2. Non-essential personnel barred from entry into work area
    3. Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE)
      1. Safety Shoes;
      2. Ear Protection;
      3. Eye Goggles;
      4. Hand Gloves;
      5. Long Sleeve Work Shirt (if required)

  3. Equipment Setup
    1. Location of VELTRUP Pump Unit
      1. Locate unit as close to pipe as possible;
      2. Ensure sufficient unobstructed space for movement of rotating hose;
      3. Ensure clear visibility of work area for supervisor with remote control;
      4. Ensure all personnel keep 3 meters clear of rotating hoses and VELTRUP high-pressure pump unit
    2. Nozzle and hose entry into pipe
      1. Clamp steel protection sleeve onto forward-reverse feed mechanism at one end and clamp onto pipe flange at entry point;
      2. Insert nozzle into pipe for a distance of 2 times pipe Internal Diameter
    3. Equipment Start Up
      1. Check all hose connections are tightened. O-rings seals properly must be properly installed.
      2. Check all air hose connections.
      3. Keep all non-essential personnel away from VELTRUP high-pressure pump unit and hoses, both stationary and non-stationary.
      4. Ensure settings for engine speed and high pressure are both at zero.
      5. Start up engine and idle for 5 minutes.
      6. Check for oil leaks and water leaks.
    4. Setting high pressure settings
      1. Press the "ON-OFF" button in the PLC to "ON"
      2. Set the "deadman switch" to "ON" position.
      3. Slowly increase engine speed setting to 1200 rpm.
      4. Slowly increase high pressure setting to 200 bars.
      5. Check all hoses connections for leakage.
      6. Set the roto-fan rotation into 2nd gear to produce high speed synchronize rotation of the nozzle. High speed rotation and angled nozzle orifice makes the water jets penetration on the wall very minimal with even overlaps. Bursting of pipes of any materials are impossible and can withstand up to 1000 bars.
      7. Operating pressure will depend on type of incrustation. Starting pressure for cleaning will be always at minimum pressure.
      8. Press the "deadman" switch to "OFF" after test cleaning is done.
    5. Cleaning Operation
      1. Set forward speed on Forward-Reverse feed mechanism to 10 mm feed per revolution.
      2. Set rotation speed of Forward-Reverse feed mechanism. This depends on the type of encrustation and the pipe size and is an Engineer’s decision.
      3. Press "ON-OFF" button to on and proceed with cleaning.
      4. Depending on setup, it may be necessary to reverse out the nozzle to ensure full cleaning at the entry flange. This is an Engineer’s decision.
      5. Proceed with cleaning, always checking hoses for leakage.
      6. Keep all personnel at least three (3) meters away from all hoses and VELTRUP Pump Unit.
      7. If another hose connection is necessary, then stop the pump. Connect another hose, observing the same safety precautions and proceed.
    6. Switching to another pipe
      1. After finishing cleaning of one pipe, reverse out nozzle and hose if necessary. If pipe is short, it is possible to pull out nozzle.
      2. Manually. In this case, stop VELTRUP high-pressure pump unit and pull out hose manually.
      3. For cleaning of another pipe, follow the same operating procedure.

  5. General Observations
    1. The VELTRUP high-pressure pump unit is always under the control of a supervisor which has to be a licensed Mechanical Engineer due to engine used. The high-pressure water is terminated within one second upon operation of the "ON-OFF" button on the remote control.
    2. It is not necessary for personnel to be near the hose entry point when starting the pipe cleaning or during the pipe cleaning.
    3. The steel protective sleeve prevents any uncontrolled movement of the hose outside the pipe to be cleaned during the cleaning operation.
    4. The high-pressure water will disperse within a distance of 3 meters. For this reason, all personnel should be more than 3 meter away. Eye protection must be worn at all times.
    5. There is a high level of safety built into the system. If the water supply does not satisfy the requirement, the system will cease operation automatically.
    6. If the proper start up procedure is not observed, the system will shut down automatically.
